Question: Did you buy 4 or 5 winter wheels/tires?
I think I can get away with 4, but I'd hate to damage one and have to put a stock Pirelli on in the snow or cold. Any thoughts?

4 is fine, if you intend to use it as a spare.
If you need to call on the 5th wheel during a storm, just take it easy. You'll still have 3 other good tires to keep things in check, until you can get the 4th wheel repaired.
The only downside is if you destroy a tire mid way through the winter season. By then, inventories are pretty low, and you may have a hard time finding a single replacement tire that matches the other three. For the $150 savings, I'll take that risk.
Knowing my luck, if I fork out the money for the spare, I'll never end up needing it. If I don't fork out the money, I'll spend half my winter driving around on a Pilot Sport as a 4th wheel. :-(

Just remember if you need different bolts for your winter rims..
vs your summer and spare rims put a set(5)for the spare in a bag in the spare tire well. I drove for two winters without this and only realized it part way throught the third Doh!!!
