Default Question for the people that have changed their timing belt...

I wanted to replace my cam seal on the driver's side at the same time as timing belt. When the belt and locking bar are removed will the cam rotate? The gear looks like it is a friction type connection to the cam and I was questioning alignment of the gear to the cam. Thanks

Default The cams need to come out to change all the seals, but the cam lock bar

will only go in one way.

Default Will the cams rotate as soon as the locking bar and belt is off ?

I just didn't want to remove the valve covers to check alignment if it wasn't necessary.

Default they most likely will. my pass side cam rotated about 60 degrees once the belt and bar came off...

which really is no big deal, because you have to rotate the cam back to TDC for the bar to go back on.

Default You have to take the VC off to change the cam seals!

Sounds like your sure as what needs to be done for the job.

You need the can seal tool also, to tension the cam chain tensioner.

Yes, chances are he cams will move when you take them out. However when you put them back in, the cam lock bar will only accept them one way. You don't have to completely. remove the cam, just take it out about 2in.

This job takes 3x the time of the TB job! I spent an entire day working (10+ hours) on just the upper cam seals!

It's about 3-5hrs to just get the VC off & put in a new gasket.

Default I am looking at replacing the seal that goes around the cam...

with the Audi tool and not the cam chain tensioning seal.

Default

If you're really careful, they won't rotate, but I'm not advocating it.
