Race story from a green horn
Okay, I've had my S for almost a year and a half, and I've been reading posts on this forum since 8 months before I got my car. I've gotten great advice, info and entertainment from reading your posts, but I've never really understood the unnatural inclination all you hard core guys have towards 1/4 mile times. I enjoy the S for all the fun it supplies in general and the great practicality of the Avant (needless to say, my car is super stock).
But I think I got a taste of what you guys crave driving home just now. I was headed into the canyon from Beverly Hills on rodeo, where the stop signs are say, a little more that a 1/4 mi apart. Approaching the first stop, these lights come plowing into my rear view mirror. By instinct, I speed up a bit to play, and this guy and I end up at the stop sign at the exact same time. In a split second during the stop, it became clear that we were both going to shoot out from the intersection. So I launch in a safe way at around 2500rpm (green horn!) and let her go, shifting hard through the top of 3rd. My novice launch gave the guy 1/2 a car, but eventually I got about 2 lengths on him.
We get to the next stop, and the guy rolls up and says (as many here have heard before): "What is that?!?
I said,which tremendous satisfaction,"It's an S4."
I don't know enough history to know what he was driving. It was a "drag me" piece of Americana, and the guy said, "All I got is a 350." Anyone know what that means?
Anyway, it was fun, and I just though I would come home, pour a Laphroaig, and share with you all. The S4 kicks ***, especially when you ride the entire torque band. Now I'm pondering that chip everyone else seems to have...

well it's all about the package, a 350 with a corvette cam is a nice little package making 350 HP
and probably about that in torque. Stock late model smog motors were notoriously weak performers.

Drop a 454 in it and watch 11.xx pop up
Had a friend in HS that had one, we enjoyed the hell out of running vette's and rustangs. DAMN fast car, just don't TURN (see end up on your head) fun car, but a little heavy with the 454 in it. (not to mention 6 MPG)
Honestly I'm like you, never understood the craving for 1/4 mile times in an S4. This car was BUILT to road race/carve canyons and it's exceptional in this capacity. If I wanted to run 1/4 miles I'd have a olds 442/camero/Malibu with a blown V8, costs 40% (or less) of a modded S4, will eat you alive 1/4 mile at a time.
