Default Re: Engine Fan

Have a question that no matter how many searches I have done I can't find an answer. I picked up a 2001.5 Avant to go with my 2004 S4 sedan. These 2 cars could not possibly be any different, but in a good way.

My question is this. Does the engine fan ever turn off? Even at 4,000 rpm's I can still hear that thing running. It's very loud. I know BMW engine fans kick off at about 3,000 rpms, so I was surprised to hear mine always running. Thanks in advance for any information.

Is it the fan in front of the AC condensor? I have seen a few of those go bad and get LOUD.

It just never shuts off. (

Try to pinpoint which of the three fans is making the noise and update.

Default That fan runs with the aircon.......................

Try switching off the aircon. Also note that the two electric fans should run together at various [fan] speeds under various circumstances. They are controlled by the FAN-CONTROL-MODULE found under the chassis leg. Mine went bad and replacement cured all. If the fan runs even with the engine off, suggest you pull the connector (to save battery) found under the power Steering reservoir.

Default Re: I was wrong, it is the belt-driven fan that is always running

The car is still under factory warranty for another month and is going in Friday for some work so I am going to have them check it for me. It just doesn't seem right that it never shuts off. And I made sure that the A/C was turned off, so that isn't it either. Thanks for all of the responses, they were very helpful.

Default That's supposed to! - It's viscous and only works when rad is hot, otherwise it just spins..........

When it's "working" you'll hear a whoooosh when you rev-up (like a truck) If you rev-up when engine cold the fan does not whooosh as it just spins with no power.
The viscous coupling works with a wax in the centre. When the wax melts it locks the centre of the fan making it "work" When cold, wax freezes again and un-couples the fan.
Other 2 fans are electric and switched on/off as required
