Default S4 chip question- is there a point in the mileage where it is not recommended to chip an engine?...

Just turned 50K miles. I'm putting on about 30K miles a year. Just wondering if I decide to do it, do i need to do it now due to engine or turbo wear?

Did a search and couldn't find an answer to this specific question. Sorry if it is indeed a repost.

Default Thanks- appreciate the link. After a quick skim...

, I did not note a mileage after which you shouldn't install a chip.

Default It doesn't matter...if an engine is going to go, it's going to go...it just might go sooner with a

chip.

Default It's not the engine you are worried about, it's the turbos and tranny.

as for when is it too late? I don't think it matters as much as how you feel about the investment in new turbos.

By engine, I meant turbos. Very few of these engines actually blow.

So is there a predictable lifespan for KO3's under factory vs tuned conditions?

Default not really. There are tons of factors (more)

- driver habits (abuse)
- cool-down
- warm-up
- oil change frequency (filter too)
- stock/chipped (and which rev of software)
- type of oil (synth)
- oil filter (stick with OEM)
- do you have a 2000 or 2001.5+
- and I'm sure that we could list another 20 items.

some people have blow mutli[ple sets of turbos running stock. My original turbos blew at 54k....after lots of driving, 42k of chipped driving, track days, autoX, etc. On the other hand, I also changed my oil every 3-5k, new filter, cooled down before parking the car, and let it warm up on winter (freezing) days....and I don't "get on it" until it's fully warmed up.

I'm sure you'll find lots more theories and opinions.
