Default Shade Tree Mechanic part deux: The A/C Compressor

Well I narrowed down my mystery AC issue to the compressor constantly being on, Zaph I wonder how much better my 1/4 will be once this is resolved. Now unfortunetly I don't have my service manual on me and I have a few questions.

1)Is the A/C Clutch soleniod controlled by the ECU or the Climate computer?

2)Is there there a relay somewhere that can be checked, if so where.

3)Why is such a difficult f-ing chore for someone to replace the toilet paper role when they use the last sheet?

Thanks
Chris

Default 1 - climate computer, 2 - yes but I would bet against it being the problem, 3 - excellent question

I will try to dig out the service manual sections if you want later today.

I had a feeling that the compressor was on all of the time - lucky guess :-]

Yeah thanx any info you can provide is great. I thought it was the restrictor since I noticed it after a drive. This morning I fired it up and the refrigerant was flowing right a way. I don't think it's a fubarred climate computer since the VAG shows it cycling the compressor, or thinking it's cycling the compressor. It must be the solenoid, relay or clutch. I'd like to know for sure before the appt..

Default Did you check the diagnostic through the climate control yet?

don't know why i'm asking you that here. I had a long night last night.

z | ...you know the rest.

Default There is no "clutch". The belt/wheel is supposed to be spinning all the time...

even when the compressor is "off".

What turns it "on" is an angling of an internal plate that causes the (4) internal pistons to compress as they rotate. The greater the angle, the greater the compression.

This design eliminates the on/off cycling of the older a/c compressors. But does add a little parasitic drag (the internals are always spinning)

Quite complex and ingenious design. There was a "working" cut-away model at the Audi tech center which they were quite proud of.

Default Damn new fangled technology..

Quite interesting thanx for the info.. I think I'll confirm opertation up to the compressor, after that it's up to them to fix.. I take it the "Natural" state of the compressor is "off"

Default Yes. And when "Off", the piston plate should be parallel with the cylinders.

If they replace yours, please post compressor cost? It sure looked expensive!

Default Re: Yes. And when "Off", the piston plate should be parallel with the cylinders.

I'm not gonna replace it myself, just because of the cost of refrigerant alone. If the dealer would give me the parts and charge it at no cost I'd love to.. Maybe I can sneak in the service bay and snap some pics... I will make sure it's not something before the compressor and will post findings on monday
