Default Specific tie rod end question for those with experience...........

I did some searching and found a way to test for bad tie rod ends. Jack the corner up and try and wiggle the wheel left and right by grabbing it at the 3 and 9oclock position. I noticed that while I tried to move the wheel and wiggle it, I kept my eye on the suspension components, specifically the tie rod end. I saw that I was able to move the wheel slightly. Now when I say slightly, I mean "very" slightly. Nothing that I would say would be a problem. Should there be no movement at all? Does anyone have any input on this?

Default Zero play in tie rods and balljoints is best.

Minimal movement is okay but a sign that the part is wearing out.

Default I just had mine changed after 90k

They didn't really look bad. The boots weren't torn but it did feel like the steering was very loose. After I got them changed, it almost feels like a different car. The steering is nice and tight again. Before it used to feel like excessive body roll. Now it feels like that body roll is all gone.

Default Best way to check is to turn wheels so you can wrap your hand around

the ball joint of the TRE, and have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth. You can feel more than you can see.

Any movement is bad.

Default cut open the boots on the old ones

if they are nice and greasy, and zero play then they're still good (i mean when they're OFF the car and you're replacing)...if the grease has turned to almost a black dust & there's play then you were right to replace.
