thinking about doing exhaust manifolds, is this a good mod?

Great mod! However very expensive, 1800 and above for mani's and if you are not doing the labor..
expect to pay around three grand. The thing with mani's are the fact that they are so expensive and yeild very little gains compared to other cost effceintmods. Not saying there not worth it but just rather expensive for the gains that it would produce. I was also going to do them to until i just had jacob port polish and ceramic coat them they perform just as well

IMO you are better off getting a......
.....port, polish, and head gasket match. Also get a ceramic coating. Much much cheaper and it will provide similar gains.
Correct me if I am wrong but, the current aftermarket mani's available have not be dyno proven to provide significant power gains.

There are a lot of discussions about this in the archives. Particularly b/w me, Todd@awe, and
VonK. Bottom line, Jason is correct->no one has shown a back to back comparison. I'm not a fan of the stock log style manifold for big turbo installs for the reasons mentioned in the archives.
With standard K04s, or big turbos with unmodified hot sides, it could be a bit negligible. Who knows for sure? Todd@AWE has been asked MANY times to show his data for many different cars(ie statistics should show a trend), but hasn't gotten to do it yet.
