VM1 installed! Impressions...

VM1 installed! Impressions...
Whoa, this thing is very well built. The first thing i noticed is that the exhaust tips sit within 1/8 inch of the stock positioning, very impressive. Then i turned the engine to check for leaks and whatnot, and i was startled at the growl my car made. A nice deep rumbly tone filled the air. No leaks so i'm off from the shop.
This thing absolutely sings when the car is pushed, then becomes eerily quiet at high RPM's. And holy wow, the power band is smoooth like butter!! The car no longer pulls with urgency anymore, it just seems to float and accelerate post haste. This thing rocks!
The only gripe i have is that is a tad loud during normal driving. There is a small band between 3-4000 rpm when droning occurs, but only at specific throttle inputs. I'm sure i'll learn to avoid this after a while. Also the stealthyness is no more. At idle the car just growls, like the cheeta ready to attack something....which is good and bad.
All in all the UUC VM1 is a great system!

Re: VM1 installed! Impressions...
Okay, this is probably going to be flame bait, but here goes....The sound of the VM1 is out of place on the S4. It belongs on a raw, open-top 2 seater. That UUC makes high quality products is without question, but the VM1 doesn't belong on the S4. I'm waiting to hear the VM2. If it is, in fact, as quiet as they claim, this is the exhaust for the S4, and this is what I will buy.

Safer to say it doesn't belong on _your_ S4
I have a VelociMax on my S4 and I love it. My selection of an exhaust upgrade was based mainly on performance enhancement. I like to take my S4 to the track and drive it fast and the VM1 helps me do that. The tone of the exhaust is secondary for me.
That said, I am not at all unhappy with the sound of the VM1. I agree w/ Rich's observations, but I've put a couple thousand miles on my car since the VM1 was installed and I'm very happy with it. As far as it being "out of place" on the S4, that's a subjective judgment. For me it makes the car sound less like a grocery getter and more like the performance beast that it is.<p><a href="mailto:jim@vipmail.com?Subject=AudiWorld Post">Jim</a>, <a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=3894">'00 S4</a>

Neither do wings or mirrors!!! ;-o
Just given ya the needle Doc. I can guarantee that you will be smitten by the VM2.
I'd love to show it to you, but I don't remember exactly where you live. In MA I think? I'm in Cincinnati so it would be rather difficult.
IMHO,it would be worth a cheap flight down here to hear it! ;-)
It's awesome.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=3258"><img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/mnpsig2.jpg" BORDER=0></a>

Flame Bait Retort
I do get the impression that the growl seems out of place in the interior of the car. I drove some people around in it recently and they were all suprised when i started the car...they said it's like a luxo roller coaster!! =P
I was really happy with the sound of it today, it's grown on me in 1 day...if Warren is correct about the exhaust mellowing out (which i had suspected that it would do) then it'd be perfect.
If you want quiet, why not get the MTM unit?

Sorry guys, I think I've been permanently jaded......
The Greddy exhaust I had on my previous Prelude VTEC was just so obnoxious, it has made me over sensitive. If you love the sound of the exhaust, by all means, enjoy it. It is a solid product. I am waiting for the VM2. Same performance, different sound.

I understand completely
I do not think that the VM1 fits the character of the S4, and the VM2 sounds very promising. That said, I have driven matthewk's car quite a bit and like the sound now. It has mellowed a little, but over time you also appreciate that it is a good tone without harsh harmonics.
Personally, I would probably go with the VM2 if it is everything they say. If it did not exist, I would be happy with the VM1. The increased noise level isn't necessarily a negative, and it is the only exhaust I have seen so far that actually improves the performance of the S4.
