What are the Best tires to upgrade to for the S4? (Nub...what kind you get again? how much $?)

Best: Bridgestone S-02 Pole Positions, Michelin Pilot Sports, Yoko AVS Sports...
...of those three, if $$ is any consideration, then most would say the Yoko AVS Sports jump to the top at $162-$170/tire since the S-02 PP's are about $220-$240/tire and the Pilots are about $250-$270/tire (prices depend upon size; go for 235/40-17 if better handling is #1 priority, 235/45-17 would probably give a better ride, and of course 225/45-17 retains true speedometer speed.

Having had the S02s and now the Pilot Sports...
I'll give you a quick comparison. Had S02 pole positions, not the regular s02s but it shouldn't really matter unless you're talking about traction along with treadwear.
Pilots win hands down for ride comfort. The S02s win for handling and steering feel in both the wet and the dry. Pilots aren't too far off in either of these categories but they do tend to start to squeal and give a bit more easily. You could say the Pilots have better predictability. S02s will scream only when you're really at the edge of being off your path.
Personally, I prefer the Pilot Sports. I don't drive the car hard on a daily basis so the extra bit of handling isn't that crucial. Ramps, back road twisties, jughandles, etc. all get gobbled up well. I just like the ride comfort the best.
Don't get me wrong. I do like to drive the car hard. That's why I run with Yoko A032Rs for all out gut wrenching fun.
If you're looking at a good set of all-seasons, get the Dunlop 5000s. If they're any better than the 4000s, then you can have some fun with those too.
If you're also gonna get another set of wheels, spend your money on strictly max performance tires and then put winters on your stock rims. You'll end up having the ultimate for all seasons. It's the preferred choice for our beastly S4 quattro system!
