When parking: leave in 1st or neutral?
I leave it in neutral (habit) but I've noticed dealer (when serviced), valets, other friends, etc. leave it in-gear when parked.
BTW, I live in the relatively flat Northeast rather than SF.
Just curious.

And I suppose that Saabs require the car to be in gear in order for the keys to be removed..
because they no longer own the car?
Cars are put in gear in case the e-brake fails..it is a second line of defense. And If you engage the e-brake before putting the car in gear you are not putting any weight on the gears....

True... but
sometimes I get the car from the dealer or valet guy, ignition off, no e-brake, just 1st gear... that's why I made that comment about the dealer. I always put the car in gear on a hill, but HSJ said that he lives in a flat part of the country.

How often or likely is the handbrake to fail, even on hills?
I've never heard of anyone's ebrake failing. On another note I do worry about messing up the tranny by leaving it in-gear and having someone "bump park", on those rare occasions when I park on the street or if I ever get towed (oh no!).

1st... Keeps me from using the e-brake...
I once had my e-brake lock up after a -30 deg night in my truck. After that I basically stopped using the ebrake except for when I need the rear end of the car to swing around

Used to leave it in gear...
But now I leave it in Neutral as my turbo timer now handles the cool down duties.
If I am parking on a hill though, I'll cool down the car myself to be able to leave the car in gear. Rather not want the car to roll down the hill.

Saab does this instead of a steering column lock
It gets them past the federal anti-theft regulation. Everyone else does it with a steering column lock tied to the ignition switch, but Saab ties the shift mechanism to the ignition switch.
