Just got a reply from the tech, he said its the mechatronics unit and yes its VIN specific. He's at a NY dealer he said you can bring the car if need be.

Hopefully it is not locked to VIN because in addition to buying one, you would have to get all that to jive
If i had to guess, its stored in the TCU, it just clicks up a number everytime it registers a launch. The value is actually counted in the ECM somewhere, i know that can be reset but it doesnt actually reset the counter in the TCU.

I think there was a thread somewhere in the B8 S4 forum on this. Replacing the mechatronics unit means you get the 0 count and can start launching again. Tech said Audi didnt warrant the part on the car he worked on.

I guess that begs the question as to whether they're going to TD1 you if you show up to the dealer with a lower counter than you had last time.

I think his internal "counter" will be the same in the ecu. I bet since he hit the 200 mark, there is no doubt he will be TD1 and on the hook for any transmission work that may arise after the fact.

Maybe not, but sciblades has an S6 and can vouch for the fact that it's limited to 200 launches (post #4).

that's amazing some have hit the limit already. I haven't used it once in 10k miles yet, I don't know what my counter reads but if there is any on there, it was prob done by someone while getting serviced or valeted.

an update to all of this I am replacing my mechatronics unit, it will cost 3k all said and done but as I find the launch control to be the most important feature on my car it comes down to a "pay to play" situation.

Just curious. Will the new mechatronics unit provide unlimited launches or is it limited to another 200 uses? If the latter, math with the $3K cost of a new unit works out to $15 per launch.

Quick Reply: Launch control will it destroy the transmission
