Default Caged Nut on FrameRail Repair

What a pain, There was a jerk that cross threaded one of my main subframe bolts. I tried to repair with HeliCoil, but after two months I've noticed that it wasn't really holding. I cut a window and next week I'll be getting together with a friend to weld over the window. If I can figure out the best way to get this "caged nut" out I'll be ok. Looking at how this nut is in there I just don't know, it's going to be interesting.

Default commin repair for me, i have doen at least 20cars befor. make sure u install

a gusset and roset weld it in place after reinstalling the piece u cut off. be as good as new, if not better!..... oh and have fun removing all teh under coating and waxy good off the area round that weld balh....

Default honestly I would have rather had a root canal than cut on frame support :)

That nut looks like it's gonna be a bear, we'll see tomorrow morning

Default nuts cake, get a air chizzel, most just pop off for me. dont freat as long as ur

buddi si a good welder ur fine. i did this for a friend who started crying after he stripped out one of these nuts. i welded in a smiley face into the repair to help make his day better once i fixed it.

Default Yesterday was all about helping others, no work on the nut, but Got it Figured out...

I helped two other forum members yesterday and had no time for my car, but at the end of the day the second guy that I was helping looked at it and came up with a great idea. Rather than butchering the inside trying to get the caged nut out, I will instead keep the caged nut thus retaining the ability for the nut to move and saving my knuckles a lot of blood. I'll drill through it, then run my new bolt through the caged nut to the new nut that will sit on top of the caged nut. I'll weld the new nut to the old nut and SWEET!

On an alternate note, of interest I had my old dogbone and poly laying around, the second guy that I helped yesterday jacked his car up to swap mine in and found that someone had done significant damage to his dogbone and subframe. I was really surprised it still worked. Pretty massive speed bump damage. Chisel/Mallet/etc and we got him all hooked up.

Default More Pics... with temp bolt and nut

so this is a temp bolt and nut the perm will have large washers and lock washers on the bottom and will be fine thread. When I finish this I will clean the write up and put in the FAQ...
