Default OT: Just drove a new Mustang GT, my impressions...

Overall, I was surprisingly impressed by this car. it was a GT, 5 speed, silver/black, no options. The new Mustang platform is lightyears ahead of the previous Fox-bodied cars (sorry ScottJ!). The steering is almost as precise and accurate as that of our cars (although it lacks the same level of feedback) and the car handles remarkably well. It has excellent 'path accuracy,' i.e. it follows the line you set for it with extreme precision. The driving position is also a huge improvement from the older cars, and is almost as good as ours (although it needs a telescoping steering wheel). The awful shifter of old is gone and the new one is reasonably decent, if not as nice as ours. The car has plenty of power and gets up to move very quickly, although I was surprised by two things- 1) The revs had to be up pretty high to really get the car moving, which struck me as odd for a big V8, but I guess it's not a small-block, and 2) The car is so smooth that it feels much slower than it is. They did such a good job of isolating the car from road noise, bumps and shakes that it almost feels too disconnected- Don't get me wrong, the ride is actually fantastic (might be better than my car's), but there's not much sense of what the tires are actually up to. This car was clearly designed so that you could cover a lot of miles very quickly without noticing it, and it succeeds in that, but it's a bit too isolated for my tastes. On a random note, the traction control allows plenty of wheelspin in a straight line, which is nice. Overall, it was a fun car, and certainly something you could enjoy on a daily basis, but it's far less of a bargain at 28,000 (the dealer added a 3 grand premium) and it just can't quite match the precision and feedback of cars like the RX-8 and the 350Z, which are priced pretty closely.

Nice review, but I don't think you'll be trading the Boxter for it any time soon :-)

Default I know it's a vast improvement over my 1979-era design.

I've only had the chance to drive a V6 auto and saw everything you did.

lol, I don't think so either- it was just out of curiosity. If our Boxster goes, it'll for a 987/997
