Default Break-in question

How careful are you guys being about break-in of your S4s? The manual isn't very clear; basically says don't redline in first 1000 miles. I've babied it so far, but my wife bounced it off redline today in 2nd. Only once and I figure it's not a big deal, but I was generally curious how much people have babied their cars in the first 1000 miles.

Default PAGING DR GP....DR GP...Please pick up the white courtesy phone....

As the good DR would say, the hell with the manual. Drive it like it's stolen.

Just try not to sit at one rpm for a while. Like on a trip. If you do go on a trip, do 80 in 6th for 30 minutes, 70 in 5th for 15 minutes, back to 80 in 6th for 30 minutes, down to 4th, back to 5th, 6th, etc.

Just don't want extended duration at one given rpm, at least for the first 750 or so. But as far as driving, rpms, redline, have fun!!! Just try not to bounce it off the rev limiter too much during it's first 1000 miles. But have fun with it.

Default That's been much approach to other cars

She only did it once. Other than that I've kept it mostly under 4000 so far.

Default The Dr is in! DON'T baby the car! Many of us believe there is NO break in period.

You really need to read the info in the link ASAP. It should make sense? The main objective in break in is to get the moving parts in the engine to WEAR in properly. The most important thing is to get the piston rings to seat quickly and properly. To do this you need to do some Wide Open Throtte runs at or near redline, followed by engine decelleration. (no brake, let the revs of the engine drop by taking foot off the gas). WOT does not have to be from standstill like a drag race.(but its more fun if it is!) No Multiple WOTs and don't beat the car. MOST IMPORTANT: do not cruise at the same rpm for an extende time. Many who have babied their cars for the first 1K miles have had oil consumption issues. others have not. Some of those with oil consumption issues have found them to decrease with mileage. BTW oil is cheap, but resist the urge to put synthetic oil in the car until 5K miles (at 5k synthetic is recommended). Again, you NEED some wear to allow the engine to break in

Break in theory

Actually I have advocated driving it hard but don't beat it.

Default Thanks. I know about the need

to vary speeds, and I always broke in my motorcycles under the "break it in the same way to will drive it" theory.

I've been running my S4 through the gears up to 4-5k in each gear on and off since I bought it. I just got a bit of a jolt when my wife engaged the rev limiter today when the car has barely 500 miles. It's one thing to rev it up, it's another thing to hear the rev limiter kick in.

Default You know I read that article, and it said

the first 20 miles were the key. If that's the case, it all depends on how the people who test drove my car drove it, because it had 50 miles on it when I bought it. My guess is they did the classic, pedal to the floor test drives, so i'm probably okay. ;-)

Default My car had 54 miles on it at delivery(directly from the port) so

Someone had to put on the miles somewhere. But the cylinder linings on our motor are so hard that it actually takes somewhat longer to seat the pistons. I actually believe that you probably can wait until 100-300 miles to start driving it hard but personally I started at 1000 miles. I picked the car up at a dealership 50 miles from my home and drove it home on the highway constantly accellerating and decelerating and shifting from 4/5/6 gear and back.
