Do It Yourself AD Blue DEF Refilling
When I purchased a 2016 Audi Q5 TDI it was my first experience with DEF and I was admittedly ignorant. I've owned and driven Cummins diesels in Dodge light trucks since 2001 and a VW 2.0L TDI but never anything that used DEF.
The first thing I did wrong was buy a few 2 1/2 gallon jugs of AD Blue from my VW dealer using the free Visa card provided by VWAG as part of the 2.0 TDI VW settlement. I didn't realize at the time that the quantity I purchased would last for several years and AD Blue has a shelf life. Oh well. I know now.
I tried to top off the DEF tank soon after I bought the car and learned that the fill neck is spring loaded and hard to fill with a funnel and using a funnel provides no way to avoid overfilling and spilling AD Blue. Another lesson learned.
The DEF tank was topped off by an independent European auto shop at the 5k service and by the local VW dealer at the 10k service. I was billed for the AD Blue each time.
I've never seen any discussion here in this forum about owners refilling their own DEF tanks. I searched this forum and found nothing.
Recently I decided to try to find a way I can conveniently refill my own DEF tank. A google search turned up this AD Blue Filler Hose sold by IDParts.com
AdBlue DEF Tube Hose VW Audi BMW Mercedes - 000012499 - EURO-DEF-HOSE - IDParts.com
The filler hose is a flexible plastic tube with plastic fittings on each end. One end attaches to the Audi DEF tank fill neck and the other end attaches to the neck of a VW/Audi 2 1/2 gallon jug of DEF.
I received the filler hose yesterday and just tried it out. It works well. The hose is designed to allow AD Blue to flow from the jug into the car while allowing air to flow back into the 2 1/2 gallon jug. When the jug stops burping the DEF tank is full.

I just go to Walmart and buy Bluedef. It comes in a 2.5 gal container with a hose. And it is cheap https://www.walmart.com/ip/BLUEDEF-D...5-gal/16933407
