CD Text out via serial to LCD? Maybe more people involved in this could get this working.
This would basically allow the ID tags from the phatbox or cd changer to display song information on the RNS-E.
I'm not to sure if the RNS-E could be made to accept a serial connection but some of you amaze me with your talents and knowledge.

Nice idea, but it won't work with an Audi head unit
because it doesn't expect any text data on any port. The only expception to that rule is the OEM SAT receiver that talks via CAN to the head unit and uses the CD changer port for audio in.
The only other option with the RNS-E would be to connect some device to the AV port. But then you have to deal with video in motion issues.

Writing to the CAN is not the problem
There are several guys who figured out how to wite to the top two lines of the DIS. If you keep the head unit you will need to do some filtering or write to the middle section which seems to be possible as well. The question is if it's worth the effort, just for the two lines of information. I would rather have some media device that uses the RNS-E as user interface and maybe add some less critical information to the DIS. But that's me.
It looks like that Audi is really against any comercial device that interferes with CAN traffic.
