"Service!" message came up on the dash display yesterday, what triggers this to come on?

"Service!" message came up on the dash display yesterday, what triggers this to come on?
It's at 16500 miles, should I bring it in? The next scheduled service is supposed to be 20k miles according to the manual. Is this an indication of low fluid level or something else? What triggers the "Service!" message? Timed? Mileage based? Or some other sensors?
I have VAG-COM ready, anything I can do there?

This is only a warning light to inform you to bring it in for the next 5k service.
It has nothing to do with fluid levels or anything like that. Your dealer should have reset the switch when it was last brought in for service unless you did it yourself. -Doug

Thanks all! It must've been a year since I last brought it in. It's only seen 6500 miles since then, the service is another 3500 miles away.
