15W50 Mobil 1...good oil for TT?
#22
I run 15-50 in ambient temps of 60-90F. My car runs cool and smooth from start up. Purrs....
like a kitten. The main reason is that when I do my high G road course runs I want to insure that there is no oil starvation in any part of the motor by running a higher shear strength. Synthetic does not coke because it is much more slippery. The lube system has no problem pushing a delta grade of 35W oil through the piping. I am quarranteed no oil starvation in high G's secondary to greater shear. I am told my car got "burned in" to seat the rings with the stock fill before break in miles. Apparently, a Weissach engineer told the prior owner that an alternative break in procedure is to high wind the motor on high speed runs for a couple minutes. The stress and heat change the cylinder wall compostion to get a greater seal hence better performance/mileage etc. Apparently, for obvious reasons, Audi/Porsche want a slow "burn in" so there is no oil change to syn before 5K or 15K respectively. This same engineer suggested 15-50 for a 60-90F temp delta because of the higher quality of the syn for high stress driving. A heavier grade of syn has better COF than mineral based stuff, so the added insurance of non metal to metal grinding is where the benefit lies. Syns are great, but I and the others that advised me see no reason to run thin stuff that could potentially cause high G metal to metal stresses. Just $.02 from the other side of the coin. My engine temps rarely go beyond the half way point, either.
