17" vs. 18" wheels and tires, is there a big difference?

You won't rub with 19" wheels and tires, but you don't want them for auto-x anyway.
Here's an old pic on 19's (ignore the missing center cap)...

The thing does not rub, though.
I'd suggest running on your stock wheels or another set of light 17" wheels with Falken Azenis sports on them.
You can find a lot of great info other places (the Racing forums on the Vortex, for example, or any SCCA forum)... not a lot of people track their cars, and you seem like you're going to have a lot of questions. ;-)

Bang for your buck would be sticky tires>>
you can run most track tires, unshaved, for auto-x. Check out Tirerack.com. Since 17s are going to be cheaper I'd go with that... if you still have your stock wheels use them, otherwise, buy a cheap set of 17s for the auto-x rubber.
Not sure if you have suspension mods, but they are 2nd in line on the bang-for-buck list. Depending on your budget, you could go across a wide array of prices and options. I went the budget approach with Neuspeed springs and Koni sports. Great improvement. Not sure how much more benefit, if any, I'd get with coilovers just for occasional track days and frequent spirited mountain drives.

i think i might run both the lm's and the c20's for a while ...
one set on each side, to see which i like better :-)
for a little while this spring, i'm gonna have 2 sets of 19" hre 545r's (different lip sizes), 1 set of 19" hre c20's, one set of 19" bbs lm's, and one set of 19" rs4 reps. yes, i'm a wheel ***** :-)
