Any MDs or others very familiar with Carpal Tunnel here?...
I casually mentioned Carpal Tunnel on the UK TT Forum and received the following message. Let me know if you have any suggestions:
My post is darn serious about my son's carpal tunnel syndrom.
There is virtually no help here in England for him.
How would I go about getting him some treatment in the States? He is 24, a software engineer, but can't work in this job for obvious reasons!!
In fact, he can't do any manual work since last June when he had to quit a job because of his problem.
He always wanted to visit the States and if you know of a way of how to help him I'd be sooo greateful.
Cheers,
Dani

I had CTS over 5 years ago, had to switch to other parts of IT where you still do computer related
work and not programming all day. Now its all better, except for a very rare instances of prolonged days of stress can cause a flare up. I was chicken, because although they wanted to operate, they could not promise positive results. A friend of mine is out of the business completely becuase of Carpal tunnel.

after 2 OSHA claims & lots of ergo adjustments, I now use a Goldtouch KB & Cirque ext. glide
both have been helpful. LOTS of info on the web; ice, rest, and anti-inflammatories help too.

save your air fare & try cortisone shot. Thats if rest & heat or cold therapy don't work
Voice-typing program may help for computer, some goodones out there now,,,if you need to go further try Johns Hopkins in Baltimore Maryland or Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnisota. Best in the world.

voice recognition: Dragon Naturally Speaking is quite good >
the company was sold a yr. or 2 ago, with some transition support issues, but the program can be quite accurate if you patiently train it [& don't overdo it, which actually increases errors].
I finally opted to return to ergonomic conventional input devices, tho'.

My wife goes under the knife Wednesday for the same
She is also having work done on a nerve in her elbow at the same time. If you need a surgeon, I can provide the name. I also second the comment on Johns Hopkins.

I am an M.D., but....
this is no where near my area of expertise. In general, this problem is dealt with by either a Neurosurgeon, or a Hand Surgeon. Hand Surgeons are either Plastic surgeons or Orthopedic surgeons who have done additional training specifically in hand surgery.
I would recommend that this UK fellow find a hospital that offers hand surgery, and then meet with a specialist there.
Healthcare in the UK is completely unlike it is here in the US. If he does not have private insurance, it may be more difficult for him to find help, but it is still possible. I know very little about specialists in the UK, but, I do know that the Nuffield Orthopaedic (UK spelling) Clinic in Oxford would be the first telephone call that I would make if I were him. The NOC is an entire hospital devoted to orthopedic surgery. Strictly speaking, Carpal Tunnel is not an orthopedic malady, but perhaps they could refer him to a hand specialist.
I sincerely hope that this helps.
P.S.--do you love the new 3.2? I am a bit jealous of you, although I love every minute that I am in my 225Q roadster just the same.

Re: Any MDs or others very familiar with Carpal Tunnel here?...
Surgery is fairly common and most times successful but there are other schools of thought with new modalities of treatment that try to prolong surgical correction. It depends on how severe the symptoms are, what brings them on, the overall age and health of the patient. It would be extremly hard for me to believe that the UK does not have Physicians capable of treating this syndrome....A one week vacation in New York or Philadelphia and a visit to a hand specialist would probably solve the problem...make arrangements for a consultation visit with the idea that immediate surgery be performed(that same week) but ONLY if necessary. There is a major possibility that surgery might not be indicated. They are getting away from this type of surgery because often , scar tissue recurs at the area of the Carpal tunnel and actually creates more problems...look for alternative therapies unless the pain is crippling. Any reputable Medical school or University Hospital can give you a list of Board certified Orthopedic Hand Specialists especially in the Philadelphia area.Call one of those offices OR Call Thomas Jefferson University Dept. Of Orthopedics and tell them the situation. Chances are they will know someone in ENGLAND that can help anyway....
