Attn forum troubleshooters: Need some help with AC, overheating and fans issues
Here's my latest issue.
Driving home today from Wisconsin to Chicago. AC worked fine this morning. I stopped for something to eat, turn the car back on, no AC.
Stopped a little later and popped the hood with the engine on and AC on. Fans were not running, either of them.
Proceeded back to Chicago. Traffic in this entire metropolitan area sucks, absolutely everywhere, from about 3:00 to 7:00 (so much that it is impractical to travel anywhere during that time). I hit the north side of Chicagoland around 3:00 and sit in bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go traffic for about two hours trying to make my way home to Wheaton. Temperature starts climbing. I watched it on the HVAC readout, and when it hit 110 I turned on the heater full blast. It peaked at about 117, but held mostly between 106 and 111. I kept trying to think of different routes home that would keep me moving, even if it meant driving a longer distance. Didn't matter, since as I mentioned traffic around here sucks everywhere at that time. (For this reason -- glad I am leaving.)
I finally got home, drenched in sweat.
Any ideas where to start? I ran a vag scan and brought up no codes. (Unrelated code 16806 and 16712 came up -- Main catalyst and Knock sensor.) Could it be as simple as a fuse? Which fuse controls the fans? Without fans does the AC compressor not operate by default?
Hopefully this one is not a major issue as I have ZERO time to deal with this while selling a house and starting a new job in a new state next Tuesday.
TIA

That was my problem...
<a href="http://maxhedrm.montebellopark.com/blog/index.php/2007/05/31/zap_i_guess_this_is_why_my_a_c_aamp_fans">Details with pics...</a> & a couple <a href="http://maxhedrm.montebellopark.com/blog/index.php/2007/06/01/zap_update">other</a> <a href="http://maxhedrm.montebellopark.com/blog/index.php/2007/06/01/zap_update_2">posts</a> about it. The replaced fuse has held so far. Still need to order the replacement box though.

Max, you are a genius. I am right now drinking a Sierra Nevada in your honor.
That was it. Just ran up to Autozone, bought a replacement fuse, stuck it in, and it worked.
I thank the Lord that was an easy fix -- rather than have to take the car to a shop or, worse, the dealer for a few hours of "diagnostics." Yet another reason this forum is so invaluable. I didn't even know those fuses were there.
Here are a few pics:

The fuse itself wasn't blown. But note that the one blade on the fuse is corroded. Also look at the slot -- think I need to do anything to clean that out in any way? I asked the Autozone guy what he thought (not that he is any great authority) but he said to just shove the new fuse in, since attempting to clean the slot might widen it up and possibly loosen the contact with the fuse.

Another problem I can add to my list of "Common issue? I've had it."

That too...but remember..>>
A higher electrical draw that would cause the fuse to blow could be a precurser of an imminemt failure of the other parts...Keep an eye on it...YOu may not be out of the woods yet...
