Default Display background goes solid red?

I don't know the proper name for the display, but it's the trip computer/radio/CD etc. display and twice now, the background has reversed itself to solid red.

Shutting off the display has no impact, but it does slowly return to normal.

Ideas?

Default It should be when its really HOT, not cold...

if the display is liquid crystal. LCD displays work because current is sent to regions of a circuitboard below the lquid crystal. The heat from the current causes the polymer chains to line up in a parallel arrangement localized to the area of the heat, reflecting light and creating an element of the display.
When the environmental temp gets hot, the whole display begins to light up as all the chains begin to align. I see this happening on my pager if I leave it in the car on a hot day, along with the car's display. As soon as it cools down, the effect goes away.

As a side note, we actualy use liquid crystal in our lab to search for current shorts on microchips, since some shorts will generate lots of heat, darkening the liquid crystal.

Sorry for the science lesson if you weren't interested.
