but feel free to post them. But seriously, does anyone know the experience they look for before training you as one? What's the pay like? Any clue?

Default I heard that they are paid on commission....

for every car that they can successfully void the warranty it is worth $10K.

Explains rampant voiding?

Default Plus $100 for each"Unable to duplicate" or "Can't verify concern".

Seems like they could make quite a bundle.

Default They do get some sort of hourly pay on the work they do.

I think voiding warranties could be seen as a bonus:-)

The ability to use a phone, to call the Tech Line when you need to do more than an oil change

I think the service writer also gets a chunk of that.

Default There was a CNN spot about a *severe* shortage of good techs, and how the car companies...

...are putting them through certified programs. This was on this weekend. UTI in Arizona is a good one; BMW has its own school there. The story mentioned that many well-trained and well-employed techs commonly made over $100k, with some mentions of $150k+ (wow!). Before I went to university, I turned wrenches for a large, private repair shop. I can really see how someone could make over $100k, though $150k seems a little ambitious.

Default About five years working on car(at least) certainly helps.....

most service managers are looking for guys that already know the basics, the basics going as far as taking engines and trannys out. Also, basic general diagnostic training is a +. For example, if there weren't any such thing as check engine lights and OBDII ports, why does this car put out 500ppm of hydrocarbons when it should be putting out 30 or so.

Pay rates vary depending on experience. If I was still an Audi tech, I'd be somewhere in the 70-80k/year range.
