Driving a chipped car... question... comparisons also to the 225 vs. APR 180
I am wondering if I can drive a chipped car as hard as I would my stock car. I frequently take it to redline, every once in a while I do a small burn out, usually racing friends. Things like this. Can those things still be done with the integrity of the car intact. Since you are forcing the car to go beyond its stock specs, how much pounding can the car/turbo take?
I just don't want to seriously damage anything with my current driving style.
Also how does a APR chipped 180 compare to a 225 stock? Then add in an exhaust on the 180?

A chipped 180 can take whatever you want to throw at it . ..
a chipped 180 with an exhaust is faster than a stock 225. I am saying this as well as anyone with a 225 that has driven my car.
A few reasons a chipped 180 is faster than a stock 225.
1. K03 allows for much less turbo lag. turbo kicks in under 2,000 rpm, where in a 225 it is close to 3,000 rpm.
2. 180 is slightly lighter than a 225.
I have about 30-35k on my chipped 180 and I do not baby my car. I have peformed 20+ 0-60 runs in a single day, auto-x'd the car with 5,500rpm launches . . . not too many people "abuse" their car more than me
Get the chip and enjoy yourself.

How will an exhaust help the car...
will it add lower end torque?
Is it a good idea to unplug and then replug in my ECU to reset any kind of "memory" the ECU would have of my driving habits, and/or current hardware setup?

I agree and disagree...
...I think the 1.8T motor is pretty much bulletproof. I put about 35K miles (including some track time) on my old APR chipped A4 w/no problems.
As for the chipped 180 vs. 225, I've driven both and the 225 feels quicker to me....substantially quicker. Turbo lag is irrelevant if you're launching above 2500 rpm, and the K04 pulls hard all the way to redline...the K03 runs out of steam at 5000 rpm or so. Besides that, you can chip the 225 too, and it's got an extra gear ;-)

of course a 225 chipped will be faster then a 180 chipped
I drove a 225 just 2 weeks ago, and I liked the power to redline, it was definitly faster and I want more boost for my daily driver, since I find myself wanting to "play" on occation, and there will always be faster cars, but I wanted something more.
Besides if I want to bruise 225 or chipped 225 egos I will drive my S ;-)

Yes, Larry said he launches above 2500, but ...
in an autocross you tend to get down into low revs coming out of turns (downshifting is definitely NOT always the best solution), so having boost at lower RPMs is better for AX.

Chipping envolves running higher boost bar....what goes must come out...
performance exhausts create less back pressure due to larger diameter piping and less restrictive resonators (if it has one at all) and muffler. IMO...if you chip you must put on a performance exhaust. Unplugging ECU will clear info but also records loss of power fault...a wise dealer might asked what happened ;-)

I would also think the lower gearing down low because of 6spd would also help the 225 accel....
faster than a 180, chipped or not. I would also think the lack of quattro on some 180's would be a disadvantage at launch.
I'd be interested to see a stock 225 vs. a chipped 180 in the 1/4 mile. I'd put my money on the 225.
my $.02
