Default Fuel sender or cluster

I am at the end of restoring my 01 roadster. I have lived with the gas gauge going backwards for some time. Now I want to fix it. Can this be fixed with vag com by inverting the polarity? Am I oversimplifying this?

By far, the stepper motor in the fuel gauge fails before the sender unit on these cars. Follow the guided fault-finding steps in the service manual.
