Default How out of line is 17-20 mpg in a 180 TTQ?

I drive in Southern California where road conditions are good and the weather this winter has been unusually mild, even by California standards.

I buy gas with 92 octane. Gas additives in California make the fuel burn more cleanly but hurt fuel economy, so I don’t expect the mileage others are getting in other regions. But 17 mpg?

I know that driving style can have a big affect on fuel economy, but my guess is that my driving habits are pretty average compared to other people in this forum, so I don’t believe my driving style is a big factor here.

Most of my driving is in the city, so I’d expect modest fuel economy, but I was hoping for better than 17 mpg.

I have two questions:
1, should I be getting better gas mileage?
2, can my poor mileage be cause by some repairable flaw in the car’s tuning?

I’d appreciate any insights.

Default I am avg. 23.5 mpg with LOTS of high speed driving (120+mph)

I have had the car since 11/3/99 and have 6500 miles on it. I am driving between CT and Long Island on a constant basis. I sit in traffic and drive on highways, I think pretty normal.

I too thought the mileage would have been better. I drive on the highway around 75mph to see how my mileage will do.

The best I have done on one tank has been 380 miles. I also use 92 octane.

Default 180 TTQ v 225TTQ MPG

Averaging 100 mph, tank to tank (only in Germany, I might add), I can achieve 14.6 litres per 100 kilometers, which I convert to 14.1 miles per US gallon. Driving to work, it hovers around the 14 litre figure and I don't floor it.
Driving the 225 TTQ is different, it is more economical at speed (unless I try and average 120mph tank to tank - hard to do even in Germany) I get 19.5 m per US Gallon. Around town it is the same, 14 litres per 100km (16.8 mpg).
The 225 engine has better torque and so one changes gear less.

I'm getting 18/19mgp, but I'm also averaging 26mph, i.e., mostly local round-town driving

Default I questioned everyone here about gas mileage recently....(more)

...because I was concerned that my 180Q should be getting better mileage. I get between 18.5 and about 20.5mpg for "city" driving...and that includes frequent "commuting" periods where we simply CRAWL. Recently, during a couple of hours of driving around 80-85mph, the fuel mileage only improved to about 23mpg. However, when I repeated the same drive at about 70-75mph, the mileage rose all the way to 27mpg! Obviously, the 180Q's little turbocharged engine is quite speed-sensitive in terms of fuel consumption.

From many of the responses I got, it sounds like my results are typical.

Default Drive mostly highway get 25.6 mpg & avg 49 mph on the trip computer. (more)

I drive a TTQ which has a Garrett chip & a Borla Exhaust. Hit speeds very often above 90 mph but avg 70 mph on 80% of my 30 mile work commute. Out of the 380 miles I get between fill-ups, I would say 275 are ate speeds of 55-75.
