key question
2005 TT Roadster. Car came with only one folding key/key fob and I would like to get a second key made before I loose this one.
Do these keys have electronic security chips or can I simply get one off of Ebay and have it cut.
Thanks

It has an immobilizer 'chip' in three different places - the fob, in the instrument panel, and somewhere else - if my memory is correct. The third place may be coded in the ECU. Someone will probably pipe up and correct me on where I may be incorrect.
In the fob and instrument panel, I believe it is about the size/shape of a grain of rice and is glued in. So if you want to renew the fob case, you can get one of the Chinese case knock offs, and transfer the key, the key spring and the battery circuit board, and carefully pry out the chip and reglue it into the new fob. Just do a search for the process on the internet.
There is a way to have a third party to create a key for you, as someone is doing it in my area, but I don't know the process. They may be starting with VAG components just charging less for the procedure - I'd have to inquire with my mechanic..

Thanks JoeKan.
So for clarity, Sounds like obtaining a key blank and having it cut isn't quite enough to have a working spare key.
Ill check with local locksmiths.
Thanks
