Malfunction Indicator Light is on?

Today our malfunction indicator light came on for some reason. Do you really have to go to the dealer to have it hooked up to the computer to get some answer as to why this came on. Will it ever go off on its own? Thanks.

are you a mechanic or do you have a vag com?
