I know some of you IT people can answer my question!
Can I network 3 computers together in a home office without a router?

Default You'll need some kind of hub, not a router.

You can only connect two computers with a cross-over ethernet cable.

I'm using a wireless system for 2 computers now, adding a third. Will a router work? Don't have broadband yet, will be adding soon so I want to make the right equipment purchase.

Thanks,

Default Routers (e.g. Linksys 4-port) are < $100, have built-in firewall, and are a snap to configure....

unlike the dreaded MS Internet Connection Sharing and similar software alternatives. Money well spent IMHO.

Default Like OcTTober said, you need a hub (or a switch)...

...You only need a router if you have broadband (DSL or Cable) and you want the 3 computers to have internet access. If you just want the computers networked for file/printer sharing or playing games, you'll just need a hub or switch.

Your wireless hub will only support two computers?

Default Do these only offer packet filtering on the internet side or..

...do they do more complex things like anti-spoofing, etc? I run a package called Win Route Pro on my server and it's really very nice. Kind of expensive, but worth the investment IMO. Of course, you have to know how to set up a rule base which can be a bit of a pain.

Thanks for all the help. It's nice to get tech info where everyone doesn't talk down to you!

Default I think you are anti-spoofing me :-) Actually, don't know about that, but packet-filtering....

port-forwarding, port triggering, IPSEC pass-thru and other stuff which I don't pretend to understand, are all configurable. The firmware is constantly being updated too, so new features are added on a regular basis. Works for me. Truly paranoid (me) can add a software firewall too. Linksys has a Zonealarm interface.
