I would get a Highland single malt - not as strong as others if friend doesn't drink a lot of Scotch
- 12 year old will be less money $25 for Dalmore is the least expensive single malt I have found and they go up from there. I prefer MacAllen or Glenmorangie

Finally! Something I know a little bit about!!!
Here are a couple of thoughts:
For around $40 you can get a bottle of very nice Glenmorangie 12yr Sherrywood Finished Singlr Malt. The Sherry wood gives the scotch a smooth and sweet finish that is matched only by much more expensive and older scotches.
For a few dollars less you can't go wrong w/ Dalwhinnie Double Wood Finished (don't recall the age but the Double wood only comes in one age).
At about $25 you can grab a good Glenmorangie 10yr. If that is your target price - go get that bottle. If $40-42 is in the ballpark, go for the Glenmorangie Sherry (although the Madiera wood is also very good).

My favorite by far is...

Lagavulin Scotch 16 Year
99 PTS BEVERAGE TESTING INSTITUTE. Outstanding aromas fill the glass with smoky peat, Sherry wood and sea salt; extraordinarily perfumed moderately full-bodied with a viscous mouthfeel.
