Default OT - Job/No-Job rumours are swirling...

Today was forced ranking day for all employee's within my company. Of the nine people on my team that will be affected in one way or another, only the Top 5 will keep jobs as a result of a MAJOR customer shifting it's buying process from a regionally based system, to a central buying system.

The change will result in a 56% retention rate of current team members or, turned the other way, a workforce reduction of 44% (within my team)!

Anyone know anything about Atlanta? Apparently, that will soon be an option, as staying in So. Cal will most likely not be in the cards...

Wow, in just 1 year, things have changed dramatically for many of us - security, jobs, travel, priorities, finance, etc. I'll bet the next year is just as interesting.

Default Sorry to hear that Glen, chin up

As for Atlanta I went there once, some areas huge (2+ acres lots for a lot less than SoCal!)

We'll chat @ East

Best of luck to you. Houses are much more affordable in Atlanta (bright side?)!

Default Lots of up side in that regard...

I moved to LA from Phoenix 3 years ago. Cost of living (COLA) differential from there to LA was +31%. Atlanta will be a negative number from LA and that is a very GOOD thing.

Simply keeping a job will be the key. I'll have no issues moving for the right job, but I do want to stay with this company.

Any personal experience with Atlanta? Might be premature on my part to do any formal research, but a heads up on whether it's a decent city in the broadest sense of the term would be helpful.

Default G'luck....

Haven't seen/heard much abt. Atlanta except that it's nickname is "Hotlanta." I don't deal as well w/ the heat so sorta out for me...also embedded s/w work doesn't seem to be too common there either.
Personally wouldn't move unless you're going to a better job market...though of course there's something to be said for having a job! I should know, I'm still looking....and yep I expect the next year will be just as "entertaining."
Good luck whatever happens...oh, also check out "Knock 'em Dead" it has good advice in the section called, "When you see clouds on the horizon."

Just checked... COLA is -22%. Not bad.
