Default Questions - I just read AudiWorld's tutorial on 5-valve per cylinder technology....

A couple thoughts....

Who wrote this tutorial?

Do you guys know of other resources with similar information?

I'm still raising an eyebrow about the technology. Their comments that a broader torque plateau subtlely encourages drivers to upshift sooner, thus saving fuel economy, was especially interesting.

Fuel economy of all of Audi/VW's 5-valve engines (even in FWD models) seems only average compared to the competition. I haven't ever driven an A4 with the 1.8T, but some of my mixed feelings for the TT's engine stem also from its flatness - there is absolutely no sweet spot in this motor. The ramp-up in torque from 2000-3000rpm suggest a continued ascention begging for more rpms and harder throttling, but that never comes. It never truly gets excited, and at least to me, that makes it feel less an emotional sports car than an appliance performing a task.

I don't totally hate this motor, and I'm sure that modified versions are quite different, but my feeling over the past four months is just that of above: the motor is just a workhorse.

Am I going out to sea again, or are there others who feel similarly?

Absolutely, the shift cue is not there.

My 1.8 gets 28c-31h usmpg. The best I've seen for a awd car with this mass.

It's a car. Barely a sports car at that. It is not some torque monster or HP rev queen.

The engine in stock trim is not even in contention, particularly in the first 10k. Buy a chip and exhaust.

Default Have you chipped it?

A lot of what you describe is the engine controlling the turbo. A chip changes that, but some of them are peakier than others. Ride or drive someone's car with a chip.

I'm averaging 29 mpg(us) ~ 60% highway nearly 26,000 miles after 10 months
