Default Re: Audi Quattro Challenge and the Tire Decision...

Okay, first a minor beef. As much as I appreciate Audi sponsoring this weekend's Quattro Challenge, I think their idea of having the info package arrive 2-3 days before the event is really lame. I'm heading north in 2 days and I still haven't received it. It was supposed to arrive today, but why? Would it be so difficult to send the info out a few weeks in advance?

Also, I did listen to those who said not to race on my new Kumhos. So I left the RE730s, and hopefully there's enough tread on them to pass the safety inspection (I looked at them today, and I think they'll be okay).

Okay, rant mode off. This should be fun, but I'm still wondering why Audi waits until the last minute to get the info out?

Default Remember, the most important thing.....

is to have fun. I'm pleased to hear that you left your present tires on the car, not only for handling reasons, but why trash a set of new tires. I've seen people "chunk" their tires in one day because they weren't broken in porperly.

Good luck!
-Cheers

Default The other important thing:

Drive the S8 for the speed laps!
That thing is totally fun for a big ol' sedan. You don't get many chances to drive a $90k car on a track...Well, at least I don't.

Default My 2 cents on tires

Talking about chunking RE 730's. Here is a pic of my 730's after 3000 miles on public roads and one day on the track. (It was a Chin-Motorsports-Event and it was fun racing the NSX's )

I must admit that I was really happy, that the 730's were shot after the event because I hated the performance - or better non-performance- so much!

I'm running Conti Sport Contact2 tires now and I'm very very happy with them. BTW, the Conti Sport Contact2 tire is the tire of choice on the TTOC Forum of the guy's that like to drive fasTT.... IMHO grip and steering response is fantastic. And most of the annoying understeer I experienced with the 730's and 040's is also gone. )) Steering almost feels like in my old 180FWD with Mark I suspension.

Talking about the Kumho's: I have them mounted on the A6. I'm very happy with the performance and the quiet ride of the Kumho's on the sedan. I think they are really great for everyday driving or cruising. However, I'm not shure if I would like them on my TT for spirited driving or driving on the track. They squeal pretty loud in fast corners...

Default I'll raise you a "rant"... Audi called today to offer me a slot - after I got the package YESTERDAY!

They have no clue what they are doing! But, I am going and it will be a blast!

After you go, you'll forget any rant you ever had about this event.

Default Nice post, but....

chunking tires is also a sign of not being smooth. Was this your first event? (No flame intended.) I did a NASA-Fl/Bimmer two day event at Sebring two weeks ago with my NSX, and my Kumho's handled very well and they showed no sign of wear. Yes they did squeal, but that's an audible warning that you are apporaching the limits of the tire. Furthermore, once I got the tire pressure correct I was just as fast on Kumho's as I was with my Hoosier slicks.

There is a point to this rant! The Kumho's are good tires, and as with any tire care must be taken on/off road until you get accustomed to how they respond to your inputs.

I'm shure that there is still room to improve my driving skills, but the 040 never chunked at all during the past track events. In fact, I attended 3 track events on one set of 040's and I was happy with the performance of theses tires, although they wear out quick.

Your comparison between the Kumho's and Hoosier slicks is interesting.

I second that. The Chicago event was extremely well organized. (and fun!)
