Default Secondary air pump function...

Is it important, besides helping with emissions on cold starts? I've been getting the "secondary air pump - incorrect flow detected" DTC, but no CEL. I'd rather not replace it, at least not ASAP, if it has no impact on performance/longevity/etc.

Default Let me clarify...

I searched through the archives, as well as read the appropriate portion of the Bentley manual. I understand the function of the secondary air injection pump, but what I'm not clear on is the implications of its malfunction. For example, there might be some parameter in the ECU that I am unaware of, such as "If secondary air injection pump is bad, begin limp mode/limit boost/retard timing/prevent WOT" or whatever. I'm hoping to avoid having to replace or repair the thing if I don't have to; it probably costs an arm and a nipple.
