This is it. I'm inclined to believe that his prob. is related to the linkage

I brought my 2001 TTR in because the shifter "chirped" when changing gears, especially...
from 2nd to 3rd. After two attempts to fix it (they blamed the shift boot design), I was ready to contact Audi. The Service manager asked me to let them try one more time. This time they said they found "grit" in the mechanism.
All I know is not only did the chirping stop but the whole linkage felt like it had been coated with teflon. Smooth as silk. I didn't realize how notchy the shifts had been before. I'm betting there was an actual assembly problem that they could not discover until they completly disassembled the mechanism(s).

I took mine in last week for 20k mile service and mentioned the notchy 1-2 shifts
I was told by the lead tech, who took a ride with me on pickup that the tranny in the TT is a VW tranny, not an Audi and that they are all like that. He mentioned that I should notice it to be less notchy after the car warms up and on warm days and I do, though it is still not as smooth as the other gears or even as smooth as my old nissan sentra.
