Default So how much life should I get out of the stock brake pads anyways?

I used to hear stuff like "you'll never get more than 20,000 miles out of the stock pads!" all the time. Well, I had one of my wheels off to check for damage on the back side, and took a quick look at the brakes. Well, maybe I don't know what I'm looking at, but it sure looks like there's a lot of pad left. Am I looking at this wrong or what?

Click the pic for the full-sized picture. Unless my dealer replaced the pads during routine service without telling me, these are the original pads...With over 52,000 miles on them. This includes a track day, several autocrosses, and lots of mountain driving while on trips to Colorado.

Yeah, there's plenty of room left on that pad.

Default Wow - are those stock discs too? 52k on a set of Audi pads.. not sure... I put 20k on mine with no

track time. The way I know is that I NEEDED to get them upgraded right before hitting the track last October. I would say that maybe you got them replaced by the dealer.

Default Audi pads are pretty good for day to day driving....>>>>

and can last a while. I have not done any serious track time...and still have the stock pads...62K miles later. My mechanic said I "could" get another 20K out of them...but I am currently looking at some Brembo rotors and upgraded pads....

Default Thanks...I honestly don't understand how they could last so long...

...Considering the amount of brake dust that ends up on my wheels.

Default Its just the compound they use...do not expect them to >>>>

perform like a good track pad, like the porterfields, but if you are commuting or spending most of your time on the highway....you should be fine longer then you would expect.

Default Just had mine checked at 33,000 miles...

The tech said I had 50% left on the rears and about 40% left on the fronts.

I am going to monitor them closely even though the entire braking system is covered under warranty.
