Default Strange temp gauge behavior... ideas?

Got something unusual going on with my car this week. Checked for codes when I got here, but none. Only thing different is that I installed a new badgeless grille this weekend, replacing an LLTek mesh grille. But I don't see how that would affect this...?
On Mon, when sitting at a stoplight after driving about 9 miles, I noted that the temp gauge DROPPED from normal to one "tick" back while I was sitting there. Never seen such happen before. Normal on way home-- goes up and stays in middle unless it heats up and the fans kick on while sitting.
On Tues, on the way, goes up to normal and then I turn the heat on; drops back 1 tick and then comes back to normal. Didn't have to sit at light, so stayed normal as I got on I-66. Normal afternoon.
Wed-- turn heat on immediately; gauge goes to normal, and then drops down almost a tick, comes back up. Normal afternoon.
Today-- watched it very closely. Just before it gets to the normal 12:00 pos, it dropped almost a tick and then worked its way back up to normal. sitting at the light, it dropped again, then came back when I started moving again.

Don't have a clue. Could be the temp sensor ($7 part, already changed once about a year ago.
Don't think it's thermostat, but I'm still on the orig. They didn't change it when I did my timing belt, as it's not really part of the job. Have a new Audi one in the box Would prob pull the intake manifold off to get to it, and do Evo phenolic at the same time.
Could be the instrument cluster, but I don't think so. Hope not... all else is working as normal on the cluster, and again, no codes for engine or instruments. Anyone else had these symptoms? Tomorrow morning, I think I'll set my center display to show the digital readout of the engine core temp, and see how that tracks with what the gauge says.

Default Maybe cause....>>

The heater is cycling on now on the cold mornings? Dunno, but it must be catching...My fuel gauge is getting a little inaccurate. Moves around about 1/4 tank...Just noticed yesterday....Time for the Techron fix, and possibly fuel sensor cleaning....

Default Do you think you can get the sender out w/o the Audi tool?

Looking at the earlier pics, I wondered if you could use a drift punch and a hammer to turn the ears where the sender screws down into the top of the tank. But you wouldn't get even pressure to tighten it back up that way...
My fuel guage has always gone over-full, and drops fairly slowly. At about 250 miles, it's still on 1/2, but then starts to drop more quickly. By 300 miles, I'm a little below a quarter, and looking for gas--just in case. Always been consistent that way, tho.

Have you read the actual temp from the a/c display window to compare?

Default my temp gauge was acting weird and finally was 2 ticks up...all the time.

everything else on the instument cluster was fine. dealer fixed it by putting a new one in. i swapped the black sensor with the newer green one and that didn't do anything.
