Trying to understand... why would one jump off a burning building 100 stories up.
I can't conceive of being in that situtation, but I can't imagine jumping...
I have been crying off and on all morning...

I don't know that anyone can appreciate the panic that occurs in a no recourse situation.
It frequently occurs in high rise fires as you no doubt know.
Oh my, what kind of horror must have been present in that building.

Absolutely horrific, but not an uncommon response when faced with being burned alive.
The burning jet fuel alone, not to mention the normal fire load in the building, probably produced temperatures in excess of 1200 to 1400*F.
I knew when I saw the buildings that they would collapse. Those temperatures are above the melting point of the steel support columns (which were already severely compromised because of the aircraft impacts).

People have survived greater falls
My Catholic confirmation teacher survived a collapsed chute fall from over 20k feet.
He punched out of his F-105 in a thunderstorm. It was written up in Readers Digest during the early 80s.
