December 29, 2002, Sunday, Final Edition

SECTION: FINANCIAL; Pg. N01

LENGTH: 271 words

HEADLINE: Nuts & Bolts; 2003 BMW Z4 Roadster

BODY:

Complaints: The Z4, like all roadsters, is a toy. Even though it has a bit more cabin and cargo space than the Z3, it's still an impractical two-seater that requires some squeezing to make bigger bodies and packages fit. Praise: It's one of the best toys anyone can have. It handles better than the Z3 and runs fast. The six-speed manual shifter in the tested Z4 3.0i is a really nice piece of work: smooth, precise, enjoyable.

Head-turning quotient: It turned heads everywhere. Perhaps Chris Bangle consulted the Celebrity School of Design on this. It's a school of thought that operates on the theory that bad notice is better than no notice at all.

Engines/transmissions: The 2.5 in-line six can be linked to a standard five-speed manual or an optional five-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0i in-line six can be mated with an optional six-speed manual or five-speed automatic, which also can be operated as a clutchless manual.

Body style/layout: Two doors, two seats, soft top with rear glass, front engine, rear-wheel drive.

Capacities: Seats two. Trunk can carry the equivalent of two golf bags. Gas tank holds 14.5 gallons of gasoline. Premium unleaded is required.

Mileage: I averaged 27 miles per gallon in mostly highway driving.

Safety: Standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes, side bags, traction and stability control.

Price: Base price is $ 40,250. Dealer's invoice price is $ 40,250. Price as tested is $ 48,720, including $ 7,775 in options.

Purse-strings note: It's a great toy. Compare with 2003 Audi TT, Honda S2000, Mercedes-Benz SLK320 roadster, Nissan 350Z, Porsche Boxster.

Default Yeah, and since they won't play ball with the price for a while, the TT was a clear winner for me.

Amongst numerous other compelling reasons, the TT beat the Z4 when I bought (even without driving the Z4).

Default like all things BMW, they nickle n' dime you to death...

...I remember looking at the 3-series before I got my (now former) A4. They wanted something like $350 for split-folding rear seats...WTF?!? I think they're probably second only to Porsche in the $$$ options dept.

The really funny thing about the Z4 is that it has some sort of device to pipe the engine noise into the cabin...oookay.

Default You're right about that! When we bought the X5 they say base price is $39k or something,

but if you want a windshield its $2k, doors $3k, etc.
