Default Buying a used 2008 Audi TT ?

Hi Guys, so i will be moving to Japan for a work assignment and am planning to get a used Audi TT with about 30K miles on it.

What are your recommendations or thoughts on this ? I have never owned an Audi before. Based on what i have of course the common statement is that it can be costly to maintain it and the transmissions seem to go out on this car.

What to expect ?

Read this FAQ https://forums.fourtitude.com/showth...-MK2-TT-a5-FAQ
Personally, I would only consider a 2011+ Mk 2 base TT unless it had the 3.2 engine with manual tranny.
They are not more expensive to maintain and the trannies are solid. However, one does not buy any 11 year old car for reliability. Lots of things on any car tend to go bad from age at around 10 years.

Interesting read.

Regarding your comment about 11 year old car; it depends which car you are buying. Unless you are specifically referring to an Audi 2008 TT. There are plenty of 11+ year old cars which can be pretty reliable.

I am not planning to spend more than 6K USD so if within that budget it can last me 2 years without any major expenses then i will be satisfied. I have seem pictures which the dealer showed me from an auction and the car looks in a pretty good condition -- no scratches, no accidents. It is not a convertible. It has about 30K miles on it. The only thing would be how well was it maintained. I will be putting about another 30K during my stay. I would think that typically major problems would occur in 100K+ miles. It is a nice looking car.

Everyone has a different definition of reliable. I would not even buy a 11 year old Toyota and expect it to be trouble free. On any car, vacuum and coolant hoses, etc start to leak on most cars due to age and brittleness at around 10 years. Suspension parts fail due to age. Timing belts are also suspect. Specifically on the 2008, as mentioned in the FAQ, it has a timing belt which I would change immediately due to age, irrespective of mileage. If the belt fails while driving it will cost $5K+ to repair. Once you replace the timing belt, I would not expect any major drivetrain issues on a 2008. If the 2008 has the mag ride option, it will likely need to be replaced soon (failure is due to age, not mileage) as stated in the FAQ and is a $3K repair.
For a cheap fun ride, I would recommend a 2005 or 2006 Mk 1 225 TT over the 2008. Much more power and manual tranny & engine that is bulletproof to 150K+ miles. It is also quattro whereas your 2008 is FWD. However, the 2008 Mk 2 has a far superior suspension compared to the Mk 1. The Mk 1 timing belt should be replaced every 5 years or 60K miles. I decided to go ahead with a BMW116i 2010 with ~36000 miles on it.
