great...error code p0171 '01 A4 1.8t. I've searched the archives..
its a "running too lean" error, and the responses are everything from hoses to MAF to fuel filters. Has anyone dealt w/ this recently? I've got 48K miles, but am 3wks out of warranty.
The fuel filter is new, so I can rule that out. Does anyone have pictures of the hoses going to the bpv and the FPR...those seem to be the regular culprits, along with cleaning (hopefully not replacing) the MAF and double checking against exhaust leaks...
Any other ideas on what I should look into. I don't have vag-com so I don't have access to other data.
Thanks

I'm not sure what you're talking about....
as I said I don't have vag-com and P0171 is the only code that came up using autozone's scanner.
P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
I'll have to check again, but wouldn't that be the same as:
16555 PO171
Fuel Trim,Bank1 System too Lean
Hopefully thats what you're talking about

Get hold of VAG-COM and do these tests:

Wish I had better advice, but it could be caused by any of the following things. You may need to go through one by one. Of course, having a VAG-COM could help by measuring how severe the problem is, but then again it may not help in this case. Audi suggests checking in this order:
1.) exhaust leak for bank 1 up to the heated O2 sensor
2.) large air leak in intake leading up to and including MAF
3.) spark plug or ignition cables are bad in bank 1
4.) malfunction of bank 1 fuel injectors
5.) carbon deposits on intake valves
6.) fuel pressure too low due to leaks, vacuum line problems, plugged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, etc
7.) EVAP canister purge valve sticks in closed position
