Default it is possible but a 225/40 /18 is too narrow a tire for a 9" wide rim

The tire would look way stretched.

Also an offset of 41 would have the wheels/tires tucked deep within the wheel well.
35-30 would be an ideal offset on the B6.

Default Re: Yes what size is appropriate and will they rub?

225/40R18 will fit a 9" wheel, but is a bad idea for a B6 A4 as it is short in height and load capacity. Many also feel that the tire looks too stretched out on the wheel to the point where it looks very odd, and does not provide much, if any, protection from curbing.

Far better to buy a wheel that is the proper fit, there are many choices out that will fit the B6 A4.

Default an appropriate size would be 235/40/18

245/40/18 will work too.

Rubbing will also depend on your suspension setup. A 41 offset shouldn't rub on stock sport suspension at all.
