If you get 17" wheels you will use 235/45 or 245/45 tires. In 18" you should use 235/40 or 245/40. In all these cases the ideal rim width is 8" but widths between 7.5" and 9" are acceptable. In my opinion 17x8 or 18x8 are ideal. It may not be easy to find a 18x8 wheel that fits the 2.7T A6, though. Most 18s are 8.5, and a 235 tire will not offer much rim protection. A 245 will make things somewhat better.
