Default B6-specific tire poll- Pirelli P6 vs. Kuhmo AST----Gary or ?

2003 A4 1.8T QMS, 84K miles.

Summer set is Pirelli P6, came w/ car at 18K. Replaced two fronts about two years ago. Rears need done. P6s have worn well in mixed summer driving by wife and long trips from Detroit>NY>DC>NC and back.

Alternatively, was thinking about getting full set of Kuhmo ASTs. Wife wants to try track driving, and wants to use this car- my TT doesn't fit her preferred setup of wheel>seat>pedals.

Have dedicated winter setup of Michelin Pilot Alpins on 16s that are ugly, but work.

Just wondering your thoughts/opinions/recommendations/experiences.

The AST is a decent entry-level all season tire, but would be horrible on the track and disappointing for autocrossing and even for aggressive street driving.

What size tire are you running? Are you willing to give up some wear to get a true summer-only tire that would be more appropriate for the use you're describing?

Tires

Default stock 235/45-17. Looking for a good balance between price and....

...performance. Wear not that important, since its summer use only. Probably why the P6s lasted so long. I have SPTs on my TT, and like those alot.

Also, my wife has never track driven before, just wants to try it. So the possibility it will be regularly tracked or autocrossed like some of the dedicated weekend racers on this forum is slim...

Default General Exclaim UHP?

What about General Exclaim UHP? Seems like mostly good reviews. Want the car to handle well, wet and dry. Like a tire $100 or less, otherwise I will just replace two back P6s.

Default If she does try the car out at the track, do they have enough grip?

Or is the sidewall too soft? Don't want anything to handle worse than the P6s.

Also have very very rough roads here in Mich w/ alot of deep potholes- so I want to make sure the sidewall is strong enough to prevent blowouts or wheel damage. I guess that's really even more important than the track stuff.

Thanks Gary. Ready to pull the trigger, just let me know.

Default I'd get the Sumitomo HTR ZIII over the UHP $92.00 each for 235/45/17

These will have better handling and grip than the P6 for sure, but I still wouldn't take them on the track much as these aren't really going to be as durable and responsive as some of the higher performance summer tires out there.

Unfortunately we have not found a particular tire type or design that is more resistant to pothold damage than another, sorry.

Tires

Default Ok, I'm a dork and now the UHPs are out of stock.

I may just get the two P6s since you have em, and I want em for this weekend's road trip ( 3 hrs each way )

My fronts are at 7mm tread depth, I think P6s are 10mm new. Rears are shot, so I may replace just two.

Went to track this weekend, I think I convinced her trying TT in amateur lap is way to go. I'll tear up the Kuhmo SPTs on that I suppose.....

Thanks for your help!
