C6.5 avant owners - premature rear tire wear ??
Ok in early January I picked up a used 11 A6 avant with @ 89k miles. Tire came with 4 new Goodyear Sport 245/40/18 tires mounted on OEM 10 spoke wheels. I took car to reputable local indy Audi specialist in first few days for once over within 5 day dealer return window. They noted all 4 tires @ 11/32 tread at the time - aka new. Nothing was noted by the shop as appearing out of sorts with the car however as I drove I noted some tracking issues and had car re-alligned at local audi dealer who noted that car was not close to being in alignment . This was done within my first 2k miles with the car. I'm not an overly aggressive driver on a day in day out basis but I will admit in trying to learn the cars performance envelope especially during the winter as I've not had a AWD car before. Having said that car is not tuned, not doing burnouts or autocrossing etc. So now 4 months later I'm approaching @ 5k miles and my rear tires are down to the treadwear indicators.
Tires have a 93 load rating where Audi requires a 97XL. The UTQG is 560/A/A and Goodyear says they are 50k tires. 1/10 of that does not seem normal. Any other C6 avant owners having issues or suggestions on causes as I don't want to put new tires on just to have the same issue happen to the new set.

Someone must have completely screwed up the alignment earlier on.
Is 245/40/18 the correct tire size for that car?
When purchasing your next set of tires, be certain they really do meet the minimal specs laid out by Audi including the XL rating, etc.
You can find detailed info on tires and wheels in the tire inflation section of the Owner's Manual.
We have a 2006 wagon, no issues with strange wear over the past 10 years and several sets of tires.

thanks - I thought if anything the load rating would impact the edges of the tires wearing more since the sidewalls were not "holding up" their side the bargin as much as the OEM specs would want?
I believe that with the c6.5 they biased for a 40% Front/60% Rear power distribution - you can feel the car squat and propel you forward more like a RWD platform than typical 50/50 Audi splits or true FWD so I did not know if that combine with the extra rear weight bias of the Avant was causing this wear.
I have to double check the alignment adjustment again - I know everything was off but I don't know if any of the parameters were off so massively as to cause this issue.

Yes, it is supposed to be a 97H rated tire with the XL construction. Would inadequate weight rating would cause odd wear? The only car I have noticed strange wear on was my '11 A4 and that aggressively wore the inside of one of the rear tires. The alignment is good on the car, I've had it checked periodically. I just chalk that you to spirited acceleration and the soft compound of a summer tire.
