I believe the SP8000E has a silica tread additive and a rim-protect feature

What does the "silica tread additive" do?

Default The silica helps in wet performance...I believe...

BTW, DonP's website has a detailed description of the differences...do a search in the archives to get the URL for Don's personal website.

The silica also reduces rolling resistance, which in turns increases MPG. Car manufacturers typically look for an energy-efficient tire to increase EPA ratings.

Default Right but they ran into problems several years ago

The did such a good job but the tires became non conductive and hence built up static electricty. People were getting shocked like crazy with the new tires.

Mfrs fixed it by adding more carbon
