I haven't lusted over the looks of bimmer since he '00s.

I really appreciate your comments on the M235. Ive had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time in all 3 cars including the S4. I would disagree about the steering feel however, without a doubt the 235 has the advantage in engine/power delivery as well as steering, but the new assisted gearbox in the S3 and the car's overall weight reduction makes it a much more delightful steer IMO than the S4.

The S3 is light on its feet...but it does understeer and doesn't dance anywhere near as well as the M235i. The BMW's power delivery is smoother and more refined IMO. The S4 has power delivery similar to the M235i and with the sport differential handles far better than the S3 when pushed hard. It's hard to really compare as it's a step up in refinement and luxury...and price as well. There is 0 steering feel in either the S3 or S4 though...and the M235i is one of few BMWs left with a little feel (though far less than BMWs of old). I like all of these cars but you have to be realistic in that none is perfect. Unfortunately the BMW's looks induce nausea.

Cheers
