My recent used oil analysis (M1 5W-40 -- 8,000 miles)
My recent UOA:

Compared to the below UOA, ring wear has decreased. This is due to successful freeing up the rings, which must have been accomplished by an ARX treatment. Rings don't get unstuck by themselves. I also used Lube Control 20 to keep insolubles low, which appears to be working despite increased blowby. All in all this a very good UOA. The M1 5W-40 held up pretty well.
PS: The copper spike is due to driving for a mile or two on 4 cylinders when my coil crapped out.
PPS: The oil filter used was the VW/Audi OEM LongLife filter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
My previous UOA:

The main issue, besides the fairly high oil consumption, is ring wear, which indicates stuck rings (carbon buildup in ringland)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
And here is Mr.D's UOA from last year for comparison. He used the same oil and put about the same number of miles on it:

For better or worse, his engine appeared to be in pretty much the same shape as mine. His oil's TBN was a bit lower, though.

There are several good labs
I use Blackstone Laboratories. You can order free oil sample kits from them. You send the sample in and they will do the UOA for you. I highly recommend the Terry Dyson analysis, which costs $10 extra. The total cost is then $40 plus postage. You can use also other labs like Butler/Caterpillar. I still recommend that you have Terry Dyson interpret the UOA for you. He has insight and experience that non-tribologists simply lack.
