Default paging moribundman and all you other oil guru's

alrite so around 2k miles ago you (moribundman) advised me to run a purolator filter with delo 400 oil. This was just a step to let me know if i should begin using synthetic oil with my high mileage (187,000). You said i should run the oil for roughly 2k miles to clean my engine out? and see what my consumption was. Well I have gone about 2k miles and iv gone through almost 2 full gallon containers. (my 2nd container still has about a quart left in it.

so im pretty sure my oil eats oil like a cookie monster eats cookies. I never see any oil leakage on my driveway but obviously this is because the underbody thing catches most of it. Though when i take that off i never see much oil or stains from it.

But anyways, when since i'v hit the 2k mile mark i'm going to be changing my oil and using the big oem filter (part #068 115 561 B) However I'm not sure which oil i should use. I'm not too concerned about money if it'll help my engine last in the long run. I'm guessing i shouldn't use synthetic since i obviously have leaks or something?
What would all of you advise?
Thanks for reading all that if you did

Default Almost 2 gallons over 2k miles? On DELO? Ack!

You got one or several issues contributing to way excessive oil consumption. With DELO oil consumption dropped in my car to essentially zero. I don't see how consumption would drop noticeably with any other oil.

Since you are not leaking any oil, I can't imagine your valve stem shafts/guides/seals are not involved. Pull you spark plugs and see if they are wet with oil. If so, I'd say you need a valve job.

Possibly your engine has sticky or worn rings. Maybe the oil rings folded and threw the towel. ;-) A compression test and leakdown test may give some answers if performed properly by a competent mechanic. I think a good mechanic should be your next step, as you won't be finding a fix in a bottle of oil.

With this insane oil consumption you are also quite possibly, or rather likely, doing damage to your cats and O2 sensors.

To rule out oil leaks, remove the belly pan and inspect the engine, tranny and chassis. At one time I was loing a quart every 1k miles without leaving more than an occasioanl drop of oil on the floor. Your car may well sport an oil "undercoating" due to an unnoticed leak.

What's your previous oil history?

Default Check your PCV system

Check if the valve cover mesh filters or breather hoses are clogged. Make sure the valve cover breather hoses are are not broken. Remove the plenum and see if it is gunked up. Also check the rubber hose that recycles blowby from the plenum into the throttle body.

Default I don't know

On my '96 A4 the mesh filters are clearly visible once you remove the valve covers. They're actually not really fiulters, but more like a liquid/fume separator. When I remove the valve covers, I clean those filters out with carb or brake cleaner.
